The Sanctuary for Independent Media uses art, science and participatory action to promote social and environmental justice and freedom of creative expression. Launched in 2020, the Water Justice Lab is a three-year collaboration between the Media Sanctuary and Riverkeeper to establish a water quality sampling lab in the NATURE Lab Environmental Education Center. The NATURE Lab and Environmental Education Center is a collaborative resource for the community in North Troy, with programming to empower the public with grassroots science.
Through the Water Justice Lab, high school students participate as Youth Scientist Fellows to test water quality, conduct research, and produce radio shows. They work in partnership with a broad range of mentors with different expertise. This program educates diverse communities about water justice and how to make a difference, develops the advocacy capacity of the North Troy area, and strengthens a network of environmental justice advocates focused on water issues in the Hudson River Watershed.
Celebrate the Sanctuary for Independent Media at our 2023 WaveMaker Awards Benefit on May 17!
