More About the Project
Since 1990, HBRWs mission has been to improve the water quality of the
Hudson River and its tributaries through education, community
involvement, and stewardship. HBRW provides hands-on science education
programs and stream monitoring workshops to environmental organizations,
individuals, and agencies. HBRW has partnered with the Estuary Program
since 1999 to foster programs throughout the Hudson River Estuary
watershed.
The Estuary Program, through longstanding collaborations with regional
watershed groups and HBRW, has championed riparian buffers as a keystone
of watershed protection. The Hudson River Estuary Trees for Tribs
project is conducted through the state Department of Environmental
Conservations (DEC) Hudson River Estuary Program. The NYS DECs
Saratoga Tree Nursery has also been a key partner in this initiative, by
providing over 80% of the plant material utilized for this program.
The Trees for Tribs initiative started in 2007. In just three years,
it has been responsible for planting more than 49,000 feet of stream
buffers along the estuarys tributaries with over 18,000 native trees,
shrubs, and grasses. Over 130 projects have been completed to date with
the help of some 1,500 volunteers.
Spread the word and send this email on to other supporters of healthy
streams in the Hudson Valley. And finally, please cast your votes for
Hudson Basin River Watch and help us strengthen a partnership that not
only enhances the riparian habitats of the Hudson Estuary but also
collects the water quality data to demonstrate the value of continued
restoration.
Thanks for supporting watershed protection in the Hudson River watershed!
